Following the war, the enactment of the Cannabis Control Act prohibited the possession of cannabis and its use in pharmaceuticals, leading to widespread concern regarding its dangers as a narcotic. However, following a report by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2016, interpretations regarding its functionality and safety began to be reviewed, leading to a wave of legalisation across the globe.

In 2023, the Cannabis Control Act was amended in Japan. Currently, the legal use of cannabis products as food and medicine, as well as cultivation under licence, is permitted.
